Topic: Exploratory trip to Djibouti “The Red Sea.”
Born and raised in Atlanta, Austin Kane learned the beauty of catch & release fishing at a young age dunking worms for brim in a backyard creek.
His fish fascination returned in college, courtesy of farm pond bass near Athens, GA. In danger of graduating early from UGA, he added a second major and snuck in a week of fly fishing in Slovenia before a study abroad in Vienna. Slovenia was his first taste of international fly fishing and things would steadily derail from there. He persevered through a few years of post-grad investment banking, fishing himself single during tarpon season #2, but by mid-2017 he decided it was time to be outside.
Seven months of fishing followed, highlighted by an exploratory mothership trip to a remote Indonesian Atoll with Solid Adventures. The comradery of this trip inspired him to start a new kind of adventure company. In late 2018, Kaniak Expeditions was born to bridge the gap between DIY fishing and luxury lodges. The company specializes in on-foot sight fishing, driven by the belief that first hand experience in the outdoors creates committed conservationists.
Based in Atlanta, Austin enjoys working at the Fish Hawk when in town but spends most of the year on the road. He spends summers in Alaska guiding for Katmai Trophy Lodge, early falls in New Mexico guiding elk hunts for LOH Outfitters, and the winter and spring months running trips for Kaniak to the Caribbean and Central America and hosting anglers at various destinations for Solid Adventures.
TLDR: An Atlanta native, Austin is passionate about wild fish in wild places and utilizing on-foot sight fishing to drive conservation of shallow sea fisheries.
